The Crypt, Suspended thrill ride at Kings Dominion, US
The Crypt was a HUSS-manufactured Top Spin ride where passengers were whirled through multiple inversions while suspended high above the ground. The installation featured water effects from a waterfall below and pyrotechnic fire displays that enhanced the experience.
The ride opened in 2005 as Tomb Raider: Firefall and operated for 15 years until Kings Dominion decided to remove it in 2020. In 2008, the park changed the theming by removing the Tomb Raider story, though the physical structure remained the same.
The ride drew from Egyptian and archaeological themes that reflected what American theme park visitors found exciting in the 2000s. This type of adventure-based design gave the attraction its distinctive visual style and appeal.
Riders needed to be at least 54 inches (137 cm) tall to experience the attraction, which operated seasonally during warmer months. Visitors should be prepared for intense spinning sensations and heights while following all safety instructions from staff.
The ride kept two stone statues in place even after the Tomb Raider theming was removed in 2008: a Monkey Warrior and a Griffin. These decorative pieces became an unexpected landmark at the site and remained there for the rest of the attraction's operating life.
