F.L.Y., Steel roller coaster in Phantasialand, Germany
F.L.Y. is a steel roller coaster in Phantasialand that extends over 1236 meters, making it the longest flying coaster anywhere in the world. The track runs through a themed area designed to resemble an industrial city, with numerous turns and twists across multiple levels.
Construction started in 2016 on the site of an earlier simulator ride and continued for several years. The opening took place in September 2020 once work was complete.
The ride takes its design from the age of steam, with visible pipes, metal structures and an imaginary airport as its setting. Trains pass through narrow alleys and under bridges, creating the sense of gliding through a busy industrial town.
The ride uses linear motors for acceleration and reaches speeds up to 80 kilometers per hour (50 mph). Four trains operate at once, which helps keep waiting times manageable.
Seats rotate during the journey and move passengers into a horizontal flying position, so riders glide through the track face down. This shift between upright and lying posture heightens the feeling of actually flying.
