Burg Landshut

Burg Landshut is a medieval castle ruin perched on a hilltop overlooking the Moselle River valley with stone walls, towers, and defensive structures from the Middle Ages. The site spreads across several levels with remains of residential buildings, fortifications, and entrance gates still visible today.

The fortress was built around 1200 and served regional rulers as a strategic stronghold to control Moselle trade routes. Over the centuries it changed hands several times and was eventually abandoned, becoming the ruins we see today.

The castle was a symbol of power that shaped how local people saw themselves and their region for hundreds of years. Today, the ruins reveal how essential such fortifications were to protect and organize the communities below.

The castle is reached via a marked hiking trail from Bernkastel-Kues, which takes about an hour on foot. The path climbs through vineyards, so comfortable shoes and enough time are important for the walk.

From the castle you can see the entire Moselle valley and its winding course, a view that rulers once saw daily from this spot. This perspective shows why this location was so valuable in those days.
