Burg Wallenfels

Burg Wallenfels is a stone castle near Siegbach built on a hilltop and still showing parts of its medieval fortifications. The ruins preserve features from its construction period and shape how this castle landscape looks in the region.

The castle was built in the early 14th century to serve as a fortress for the local lords. In the 15th century it was abandoned and its stone materials were taken to construct the nearby Burg Tringenstein.

The castle shows how medieval nobles in this region built their strongholds to display power and control the land around them. Hilltop locations like this one were chosen specifically to watch over the valleys below.

The ruins sit on a hilltop and are reached through a path that connects local walking routes in the area. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the ground is hilly and some approaches can be steep.

The village of Wallenfels grew up directly around the castle and has remained a tiny settlement with very few residents over the centuries. This connection between the fortress and the settlement shows how castles shaped where people chose to live in the region.
