Burg Wallenstein

Burg Wallenstein is a castle ruin on a hilltop near Knüllwald, Germany, showing the remains of a medieval fortress. The preserved stone walls still form a solid core where you can identify a former tower that now serves as an observation point.

The castle was founded before 1220 to protect the Abbey of Hersfeld's territories. It was destroyed by Croatian troops in 1637 during the Thirty Years' War, after which the site gradually fell into decline.

The ruins show how castles in this region were built to protect trade routes and monastery lands. You can still see how residents used the hilltop location to watch over the surrounding area.

The site is reached by hiking trails that lead up the hilltop, allowing visitors to explore the ruins up close. The surrounding area is generally accessible, but good footwear is recommended since trail conditions can vary depending on weather.

The castle's stones were quarried around 1900 for building projects in the area until preservation efforts began in 1957. This late-stage rescue by the Prussian government saved the visible stonework from complete decay.
