Burg Wallenstein

The preserved stone walls of Burg Wallenstein rise above a hilltop, featuring a former staircase tower that functions as an observation platform.

Built before 1220 to protect the Abbey of Hersfeld territories, the castle was later destroyed by Croatian troops during the Thirty Years' War in 1637.

The castle ruins represent medieval German defensive architecture, with the remaining 12-meter keep demonstrating construction techniques from the 13th century.

Visitors access the castle through hiking trails that lead to the hilltop location, where they can examine the preserved walls and outer bailey remains.

The castle's stones were repurposed as construction materials around 1900, until preservation efforts began in 1957 under Prussian government direction.
