Burg Neuenstein, Medieval castle in Saasen, Germany
Burg Neuenstein is a castle located in Neuenstein in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district of northern Hesse. The structure features a tower rising about 28 meters (92 feet) and sits on elevated ground with views across the surrounding landscape.
The castle was founded around 1250 by Albert I of Wallenstein and first appeared in documents in 1267 as Neuwallenstein. Following its destruction in 1318 on the orders of Abbot Simon I of Buchenau, it received permission to be rebuilt in 1357.
The structure represents the architectural evolution from a medieval fortress to an administrative center, reflecting changes in German nobility requirements through centuries.
The site has served as a conference and event center since 2003 following extensive renovations by the municipality between 2002 and 2003. Visitors should be aware that the grounds may be in use for private events, which can affect access to certain areas.
The name Neuwallenstein suggests an original connection to Wallenstein, though the exact origin of this link remains unclear in historical records. This naming hints at early ownership patterns and influences that shaped how the fortress developed over time.
