Burg Milnrode, castle ruin
Burg Milnrode is a castle ruin in Bad Hersfeld located on a forested ridge at approximately 270 meters elevation. The site displays the foundations of the upper castle measuring roughly 33 by 23 meters and features a preserved circular tower, with ruins scattered across the wooded terrain.
The castle was built in the 12th century by the Milnrode family and is first documented in 1184 when a member named Folpertus held ownership rights. In the 15th century, the von Buchenau family took control, and later in 1578, the Stift Hersfeld purchased parts of the land including fields and meadows.
The name Burg Milnrode comes from the Milnrode family, nobles who built and controlled this place in medieval times. The ruins now stand as a quiet reminder of how castles shaped the lives and power of people in the region.
The ruins are freely accessible and free to visit with no set opening times. The ground is natural and not wheelchair accessible, with uneven paths between the old walls, so sturdy shoes and care are recommended.
A small farm named Schuchhof was built on top of the castle ruins and was inhabited until 1610, when it was abandoned. This unusual reuse shows how people adapted medieval remains into their everyday lives.
