Wallenstein Castle

Wallenstein Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Knüllwald, Germany.

Wallenstein Castle is a medieval fortress ruin perched on elevated ground in Knüllwald, with preserved stone walls and a standing tower section. The remains reveal the layout of a fortified settlement with clear defensive features that protected this strategic location.

The fortress was founded in 1223 under the Counts of Schauenburg as a border defense against the expanding power of the landgrave. The von Wallenstein family took over the castle later and inhabited it for more than five centuries, until their male line ended in 1745.

The name recalls the von Wallenstein family, who made this place their home for centuries and left deep marks on local history. Visitors today can sense how this site held importance for the region across generations.

The ruins are accessible year-round and reached via marked hiking trails from Knüllwald. The walk to the site gives you a good chance to explore the surroundings and approach the location from different angles.

Few visitors realize the castle once stood as one of the region's major defensive strongholds, and its hilltop position still commands attention from afar. The vantage point offers views across the landscape that explain why this location held such strategic value.
