Wellheim Castle

Wellheim Castle is a stone fortification standing on Jurassic rock above the town and features a square tower built from carefully dressed stone blocks rising about 35 meters high. The layout reveals how such structures served both as defensive positions and displays of power.

The castle was built in the 12th century and underwent changes until it was abandoned in the 18th century, when portions of the structure were partially demolished. These changes reflect how the importance of such fortifications gradually declined over the centuries.

The castle displays building styles that were common for noble residences in this region, and its stone walls reveal medieval craftsmanship and construction methods. Walking through the site helps you understand how those in power expressed their authority through such structures.

You can reach the castle grounds by following local roads in Wellheim, but the structure itself is not accessible for wheelchair users. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the site sits on rocky terrain with uneven surfaces.

The north wall required reconstruction in 1935 after numerous stones had been removed from the structure and reused for other building projects across the region. This shows how construction materials from old buildings were recycled over many decades.
