The stone fortification stands on Jurassic rocks above Wellheim town, featuring a quadratic tower constructed from rusticated ashlar blocks rising 35 meters high.
The castle, constructed in the 12th century, underwent modifications until its abandonment in the 18th century, when parts of the structure were partially demolished.
The castle represents the architectural trends of Bavarian nobility, with its remaining structures displaying medieval stone masonry techniques and defensive engineering.
Visitors can reach the castle grounds through local roads in Wellheim, but should note that the structure remains inaccessible to wheelchairs.
The castle's north wall required reconstruction in 1935 after numerous stones were removed and repurposed for other construction projects in the region.
