Burg Wildeck, Medieval castle ruins in Wildeck, Germany
Burg Wildeck is a castle ruin in southern Richelsdorf Mountains and consists of wall remains, sections of a moat, and modern buildings erected on ancient foundations. The surviving residential tower and ring wall still show the structure of the original fortress.
The fortress was built in the 13th century by Thuringian landgraves and first appears in records in 1289. It came under the control of Fulda Abbey in 1301 and suffered destruction in 1525.
The site takes its name from the local area and draws people interested in discovering the region's past. Visitors find a place where medieval heritage remains visible in the modern landscape.
The site sits on Schlossberg at about 350 meters elevation and is surrounded by forest terrain that slopes across hills. Visitors should expect forest paths and uneven ground, and wear suitable footwear accordingly.
After being destroyed in 1525, the ruins were later transformed and became known as Blumenstein hunting lodge, gaining an entirely new purpose. This transformation shows how the location changed its function and identity across the centuries.
