Schloss Blumenstein

Schloss Blumenstein is the site of a hunting lodge that stands at 350 meters above sea level on a ridge within the Richelsdorfer Gebirge mountains. The remains include surviving wall sections and foundations spread across a forested hilltop location.

A medieval castle from 1250 originally stood on this site before being replaced by a hunting lodge in 1727. Landgraf Ernst II Leopold von Hessen-Rotenburg commissioned the new structure using materials from the earlier fortification.

The site shows how local groups today care for and connect with this historic place. Community members and associations actively maintain the remaining walls through their participation and support.

The site sits on a forested hilltop, so sturdy shoes and weather protection are recommended for a visit. Foot access comes through forest paths that lead from the village below.

When the lodge was built in 1727, builders reused stones directly from the earlier medieval castle, mixing old and new materials in the walls. This practical building approach shows how construction projects of that era managed resources efficiently.
