Burg Tannenberg

Burg Tannenberg, Medieval castle in Nentershausen, Germany.

Burg Tannenberg is a castle in Nentershausen whose stone walls rise above the Richelsdorfer mountains and feature defensive towers alongside architectural elements from the 14th century. The structure displays typical characteristics of a medieval fortress, with visible stonework remains that illustrate the spatial layout and defensive purpose of the former stronghold.

Ludwig I of Baumbach built the fortress around 1300 as a strategic stronghold that the Baumbach family controlled until 1360. After this period, the castle changed hands multiple times and gradually lost its defensive importance in the region.

The Burgfest festival brings together local residents each year to celebrate regional traditions through music, food, and historical reenactments held on the grounds. The event shows how the fortress remains a gathering place for the community and a focal point for shared memories.

The ruins are accessible year-round and can be explored freely, with guided tours offered through the Friends of Tannenberg association. It is advisable to wear suitable footwear, as the terrain is uneven and the paths to the walls can sometimes be steep.

Village residents repurposed stones from the castle walls to build their own homes, creating a lasting architectural connection between the fortress and the surrounding community. This practice shows how the castle became part of everyday life after its decline.
