Burg im Dannsee

Burg im Dannsee is castle ruins on a former island site in Sauensiek, showing foundations and remains of medieval fortifications. The grounds now sit dry where water once surrounded the stronghold, allowing visitors to explore the historical layout.

The castle arose in the early 1300s and faced rapid destruction soon after its founding. These early conflicts shaped the place and reveal how contested the region was during that period.

The site takes its name from the vanished lake on whose former island the castle stood. Visitors can see the foundations today and imagine the medieval settlement that once existed here.

The site is open to visitors and has been prepared for public exploration after being acquired by the municipality. Sturdy footwear is wise, as the grounds are uneven and can turn slippery in wet conditions.

Stone projectiles fired during an early siege were later dug up and are now displayed in regional museums. These objects offer direct evidence of the violence that erupted at this place.
