Burg im Dannsee, Medieval castle ruins in Sauensiek, Germany
The castle ruins stand on a former island in the dried Dannsee lake, featuring foundations and remnants of defensive structures from the 14th century.
Built around 1310 by Heinrich von Borch, the castle faced a siege in 1311 by forces including the Archbishop of Bremen and Duke of Lüneburg.
Archaeological excavations in 1859 revealed foundations, a brick oven, and palisade remains that illustrate medieval construction techniques in Lower Saxony.
The castle grounds, acquired by Beckdorf municipality in 2001, are open to visitors and underwent excavation work in 2003 for public access.
Five stone projectiles discovered in 1976 from the castle's siege are now exhibited in museums in Stade and Buxtehude.
