Burg Oberhohenberg, Medieval castle ruins in Schörzingen, Germany.
Burg Oberhohenberg is a castle ruin in Schörzingen positioned on a hilltop with stone walls and foundations that remain clearly visible. The site is surrounded by defensive ditches and features an observation platform from which visitors can view both the layout and the surrounding landscape.
The fortress was built around 1050 to 1100 by the Hohenberg family and served as their family seat for generations. In 1449 it was destroyed by soldiers from Rottweil and was no longer usable as a residence afterward.
The name reflects the Hohenberg family who built and ruled from this place, their power extending across the surrounding lands. Visitors can trace the outlines of medieval structures and sense how people lived and protected themselves during that era.
The site is accessible by hiking trails and features information boards explaining its background. Visitors should wear sturdy walking shoes and be ready for a steep climb, as the hillside is quite inclined.
A reconstructed chapel and modern stairs show the work of researchers who studied the site about 100 years ago. Their excavations provided insights that later helped experts understand other castles across the region.
