Ortenberg

Ortenberg is a mountain summit in the Black Forest region near Offenburg that rises 163 meters and commands views of the Kinzig valley and the Upper Rhine Plain. The peak is accessible via marked hiking trails that depart from the nearby town below.

The peak gained prominence in 1233 when Ortenberg Castle was built here as a strategic fortified stronghold overlooking the valley below. The fortress played an important defensive role in controlling the region for centuries.

The mountain is a popular walking destination for people from the surrounding region who use and maintain traditional routes here. The forested slopes and meadows shape how locals have lived alongside this landscape for generations.

You can start hiking from the town of Ortenberg below, which offers marked routes to the summit in all directions. The trails are walkable year-round, though sturdy footwear is wise after wet weather when paths become muddy.

This location marks a natural boundary where the Black Forest foothills meet the flat Rhine Valley farmland, creating a striking visual transition. From the summit, you can see how sharply the landscape changes from forest to plain on either side.
