Burg Osten, Medieval lowland castle ruin in Kruckow, Germany
Burg Osten is a medieval castle along the Tollense River in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with visible stone remains and rectangular structures. The main fortress stands in the southwest, while its outer defensive area extends in front with earthen ramparts.
The fortress emerged in the medieval period as a control point on an important trade river and served as a toll station for merchants. It was later abandoned and its stones were removed for use in other buildings.
The fortress was part of a network of defenses that monitored and protected trade along the Tollense River. It shows how medieval rulers controlled their territories through strategically positioned strongholds.
The ruin sits along the road between Schmarsow and Roidin and can be reached from there. The site is accessible year-round, and the open grounds allow visitors to explore freely.
The northeastern section still displays thick wall segments that reveal how castle builders created stable structures on flat land. These substantial walls were necessary to stand firm without natural elevation.
