Rabeneck Castle, Medieval castle in Waischenfeld, Germany.
Rabeneck Castle is a hilltop fortress above the Wiesent valley, near the small town of Waischenfeld in Franconian Bavaria. The complex includes several towers, a chapel, and buildings from different centuries arranged around a central courtyard enclosed by thick stone walls.
The castle was founded around 1250 by the Rabenstein family as a residence and defensive post. It changed hands several times over the following centuries, and each period left traces on the buildings that are still visible today.
Rabeneck Castle hosts a falconry center where visitors can watch birds of prey fly freely during demonstrations held within the castle grounds. The sight of trained birds moving through the old stone courtyards gives the place a living quality that goes beyond a typical historic site visit.
Reaching the castle requires a short uphill walk on uneven ground, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. Visiting on a day when falconry demonstrations are scheduled adds a lot to the experience, so checking what is planned before arriving is worthwhile.
Rabeneck is one of the few castles in Bavaria where falconry is actively practiced, and falconry itself is recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural practice. This means a visit here touches on two separate layers of heritage at the same time.
