Leipzig City Tunnel, Railway tunnel in central Leipzig, Germany
The Leipzig City Tunnel is a railway passage that runs approximately 3.6 kilometers beneath the city center, connecting four underground stations. It links the main station with Bayerischer Bahnhof and carries regular train traffic throughout the day.
Construction started in 2003 after decades of planning, and passenger operations began in 2013. This marked a major shift in how the city's rail network functioned and how regions around Leipzig were connected.
The tunnel transformed how people move through the region by bringing multiple train lines together beneath the city center. Today, travelers experience this underground passage as a key connection linking different parts of Leipzig.
The stations sit roughly 17 to 22 meters below street level and are reached by stairs or elevators. Trains run regularly throughout the day, so waiting times are generally short.
Special compensation grouting techniques were used during construction to protect the historic buildings above the tunnel from settling. This allowed the project to dig beneath one of Germany's oldest city centers without damaging the historic structures.
