Colbitzer Lindenwald

Colbitzer Lindenwald is a protected forest reserve in the Altmark region with diverse broadleaf and mixed woodland. The area contains winter lime trees, pedunculate oaks, hornbeams, and birches distributed across different forest age classes.

The forest received its first protection in 1907 when roughly 13 hectares were designated as primeval woodland. The protected area underwent several expansions in the following decades to reach its current boundaries and status.

The forest has maintained 28 hectares of completely protected land for research purposes, preserving a primeval forest environment for scientific studies.

Two marked hiking trails run through the reserve with distances of approximately 1.5 and 4 kilometers. Informative signs along the routes explain the local plant and animal life as well as the forest ecosystem.

Winter lime trees in the reserve reach ages of around 200 years, while certain oak specimens are between 400 and 600 years old. These different tree generations create a natural forest laboratory for understanding long-term woodland development.
