Concordiasee, Artificial lake in Salzlandkreis, Germany
Concordiasee is an artificial lake in Salzlandkreis covering roughly 350 hectares of water with depths reaching 61 meters. Located northwest of Aschersleben in Saxony-Anhalt, it now serves as a recreation area where visitors swim, boat, and enjoy water sports.
The lake formed in 1996 when flooding operations filled the former Nachterstedt open-pit lignite mine. What had been an industrial mining landscape was transformed into a recreational water body.
The MS Seelandperle passenger ship, introduced in 2005, carries 250 passengers across the lake, connecting visitors with the region's mining heritage.
The lake is suitable for swimming from May through September, with water temperatures ranging from about 14°C in May to 24°C in August. Regular quality tests ensure safe conditions for visitors throughout the bathing season.
A major landslide in July 2009 forced temporary closure and led to the creation of a dedicated monitoring office. This oversight reflects ongoing efforts to keep the site safe for visitors.
