Deutschordensschloss Mülheim/Möhne, Medieval château and monastery in Warstein, Germany
Deutschordensschloss Mülheim/Möhne is a fortified commandery with a three-story main building that features a distinctive multi-axis facade. The complex sits surrounded by defensive moats and contains a spacious inner courtyard flanked by various auxiliary structures.
The site began as a count's fortress around 800 and passed to the Teutonic Order in 1266 through a donation. Fires in the 1500s and 1600s led to major reconstruction, with the current main building completed around 1682.
The commandery served as a gathering place where local Teutonic Order members conducted religious duties and managed surrounding estates. The courtyard arrangement still reflects how daily life and work were organized around this central space.
The exterior walls and structures remain visible from the road year-round, allowing visitors to explore the complex from outside. The church built in 1707 continues to function as an active parish church where you can experience the interior.
The structure survived two major fires that ravaged the region and was completely rebuilt afterward. This resilience shows in the solid stone walls that still stand today and tell the story of the site's endurance.
