Groov, marina
Groov is a park and marina on a peninsula surrounded by the Rhine river in the southern part of Cologne, located in Zündorf. The area features two lakes, sandy beaches, walking paths, fountains, and open spaces with mature trees and well-maintained grounds.
The island was connected to the mainland by a dam in 1849 and previously served as a natural harbor due to its gravel bar formation. In the 1970s the area was redesigned as a modern park, transforming an old river channel into two recreational lakes.
The name comes from the Celtic word for gravel bar, reflecting the river's natural role in shaping settlement here. Today the place draws walkers, cyclists, and photographers who gather at waterside cafes and restaurants to watch the river flow.
The area is easily reached by tram line 7 to Zündorf station and offers ample parking for drivers. The paths are well-maintained, bicycle-friendly, and accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, making visits comfortable for everyone.
A ferry service connects Zündorf to Weiss on the opposite side of the Rhine from March through October, offering an unusual way to explore the region. This small boat lets cyclists and walkers plan longer routes using both riverbanks.
