Ribnitzer Großes Moor, Protected wetland area near Dierhagen, Germany
Ribnitzer Großes Moor is a protected wetland near Dierhagen covering about 274 hectares with multiple peat bog types. The landscape transitions from low moors to high moors, creating different habitats and water zones throughout the area.
The area became a protected nature reserve in 1939 to safeguard its distinctive peat bog landscapes. Major restoration efforts from 1996 to 1998 aimed to recover and maintain the moor's natural character and ecological systems.
The Forest and Moor Information Center in Neuheide presents exhibitions documenting the 6,000-year development of this high moor landscape.
Access is mainly on foot using marked walking trails throughout the moor. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing as paths can be wet and muddy.
The moor is home to the rare moorland frog, which develops a striking blue color during breeding season. Spotting these colored frogs in spring is a special natural phenomenon in this area.
