Freilichtmuseum Klockenhagen, Open-air museum in Ribnitz-Damgarten, Germany.
Freilichtmuseum Klockenhagen is an open-air museum near Ribnitz-Damgarten that brings together farmhouses, barns, and workshops from different villages across Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The buildings were dismantled in their original locations and rebuilt here, along with household objects and tools that give a clear picture of rural life across several centuries.
The museum was founded in the 1960s to save farmhouses and other rural buildings that were threatened with demolition across the region. Over time the collection grew, and the site became one of the main open-air museums in northern Germany.
The museum shows how rural life in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania once looked, through original buildings and craft demonstrations. Visitors can watch traditional trades in action and sometimes take part directly, which makes the experience easy to understand.
The museum is generally open from April to October, and a dry day makes walking between the buildings much more comfortable. Sturdy shoes are a good idea since the paths across the grounds can be uneven.
One part of the grounds holds an herb garden laid out according to the teachings of Abbess Hildegard von Bingen, with around 300 plant varieties. Many of these medicinal plants were used across the region for centuries and can still be seen in flower during the warmer months.
