Einsiedelner Kapelle, Baroque chapel in Rastatt, Germany.
The Einsiedelner Kapelle is a baroque chapel in Rastatt with ornate stonework and two saint statues flanking the entrance portal. The building has two levels: the main chapel above and a lower section where historical graves are located.
The chapel was built in 1715 by Johann Michael Ludwig Rohrer as a copy of the Swiss pilgrimage church Maria Einsiedeln. It was created following the Peace of Rastatt and reflects how pilgrimage sites inspired local religious architecture.
The chapel houses a copy of the Black Madonna of Einsiedeln, surrounded by golden lightning bolts and angels. The interior design keeps the focus entirely on this religious image.
Visitors can explore the main floor and then go down to the lower section with historical graves. The building has stairs to navigate between levels, so wear comfortable shoes.
The lower level contains a replica of the Birth Grotto of Bethlehem, recreating the holy destination within the chapel grounds. Beneath the building rest graves of Piarist Fathers from the 18th century.
