Eiskeller, Historic ice cellar in Campus Westend, Frankfurt, Germany
The cylindrical stone structure stands seven meters tall with a diameter of five meters, featuring both rough exterior walls and regular stone blocks inside.
Built in 1859 as part of the psychiatric facility directed by Heinrich Hoffmann, this ice cellar served for medical purposes during the 19th century.
The structure represents the evolution of medical practices in Frankfurt, where ice storage played a role in psychiatric treatment methods.
Visitors can access the ice cellar during library hours at the University of Frankfurt's Social Sciences and Psychology Library building.
The triple-door entrance system leads to a conical interior chamber designed to slow down the ice melting process throughout summer months.
