Adornodenkmal, Glass cube memorial at Westend Campus, Frankfurt, Germany.
The Adornodenkmal is a transparent glass cube on the Westend Campus of Goethe University Frankfurt. Inside it, a desk, a chair, and several objects recreate the workspace of philosopher and music theorist Theodor W. Adorno.
The memorial was erected in 2003 to mark the 100th birthday of Theodor W. Adorno, one of the most influential German philosophers of the 20th century. It stands on the campus where he once taught and worked.
Quotes from Adorno's writings are engraved on marble slabs placed around the glass cube, inviting visitors to read his words up close. The texts come from different works and give a direct sense of how he thought and wrote.
The memorial stands in the open on campus and can be seen from outside without any special arrangements. Walking around the glass cube lets you take in the interior and the surrounding marble slabs from every angle.
Inside the cube, a metronome ticks at an angle on top of a book, a detail that points to Adorno's deep engagement with music theory. It is easy to miss at first glance, but it quietly says a great deal about how central music was to his work.
