Evangelische Kreuzkirche Wiedenest
Evangelische Kreuzkirche Wiedenest, Lutheran church in Wiedenest, Germany
The Evangelical Cross Church in Wiedenest sits on a walled cemetery along the slope of the Dörspetal valley and features a three-nave pillar basilica design. The building occupies an elevated position that reflects medieval church architecture of this region.
The building originated in the early 12th century as an offshoot of the Gummersbach parish church and gained rights for its own priest and baptismal font in 1154. This independence represented a significant turning point in the development of the local community.
Wall paintings from the 15th century depict the legend of the Holy Cross and biblical stories spanning from Adam to Heraclius with detailed imagery. These painted scenes remain visible and offer visitors insight into the religious narrative traditions of the late medieval period.
The site is accessible from the center of Wiedenest via a short path, and the cemetery wall provides natural orientation for visitors. The location is easily explored on foot and offers sufficient space to move around the church and adjoining graveyard.
Organ builder Johannes Rohlf installed his first instrument here in 1964, a work with seven registers that fits gracefully into the church's balustrade. This early creation documents the beginning of a recognized organ-building career in the region.
