St. Laurentius, Romanesque church in Lessenich/Meßdorf, Germany
St. Laurentius is a Romanesque church in Lessenich/Meßdorf featuring a central nave from 1080 and a choir tower. A north aisle was added around 1200, with two-tone exterior walls that emphasize its architectural lines.
The building suffered severe damage during the Thirty Years' War, leading to the complete destruction of its south aisle in 1650. After the conflict, it was restored in 1651 with baroque elements.
The interior displays artworks from different periods, including a crucifixion group from 1621 and religious statues spanning centuries. These pieces show how people have added to and cared for this place over time.
The building underwent extensive renovations in the 1960s after earthquake damage affected it. The south aisle was reconstructed using its original foundation.
A procession honoring the Sacred Heart of Jesus that takes place here since 1708 is among the earliest of its kind. This celebration continues at this location and connects religious tradition with local history.
