Jewish cemetery, Freiburg im Breisgau

The Jüdischer Friedhof is a burial ground with around 761 gravestones arranged in orderly rows. The stones display various architectural styles from different periods and carry inscriptions in Hebrew and German.

This burial ground was established in 1870 after the Jewish community had been burying its dead in cemeteries of neighboring towns like Breisach and Sulzburg. This founding allowed the community to finally conduct its own burials locally.

The gravestones carry Hebrew and German inscriptions that show how the Jewish community wove its traditions into local life. These bilingual texts and symbols on the stones tell the story of people who made this place their home.

The cemetery is located at the corner of Rosbaumweg and Elsässer Strasse and is easy to reach. Keep in mind that it maintains different seasonal schedules and closes during Jewish holidays.

On the cemetery grounds stands a memorial dedicated to fallen Jewish soldiers from World War I. This same memorial also honors those who perished during Nazi persecution between 1933 and 1945.
