Seepark Betzenhausen

Seepark Betzenhausen is a large public park centered around an artificial lake in western Freiburg, with interconnected walking paths, green spaces, and recreational zones throughout. The site includes a viewing tower, sports facilities, mini-golf, and a Japanese garden as key features.

The land was once farmland that became a gravel pit starting in the 1920s, then was transformed into a public park during the 1980s. This conversion reshaped the area from an industrial site into the recreational green space it is today.

The Japanese garden invites visitors into a space designed around flowing water and natural elements arranged in traditional style. Walking through it, you encounter carefully placed stones, vegetation, and small bridges that create moments of stillness.

The park is easily accessible for walkers and offers many spots to rest, relax, or have a picnic throughout the grounds. Weekends tend to be busy, so visiting on weekdays or early mornings provides a quieter experience.

The park grew from a former gravel quarry, and you can still see evidence of this past in the landscape's topography. The varying heights and the lake's shape reflect how the earlier extraction work shaped the terrain.
