Fischerhuder Wümmeniederung, Protected natural area in Ottersberg, Germany.
Fischerhuder Wümmeniederung is a protected natural area near Ottersberg that spans several hundred hectares and is crossed by multiple channels of the Wümme River. The terrain displays open grassland that alternates with water-rich zones throughout the reserve.
The reserve was officially protected in 2006, safeguarding a river valley that formed after the last ice age. The protection was established to preserve this natural landscape and its inhabitants for future generations.
The area is shaped by traditional farming methods that have been practiced by local farmers for generations. These practices keep the grasslands open and allow many plants and animals to thrive here.
The area can be explored on marked walking paths that wind through the terrain. Canoes and other non-motorized boats are allowed on the river, but only during certain seasons.
In winter, water regularly floods the area and temporarily creates new channels and water surfaces. These seasonal changes attract otters, lampreys, and numerous bird species that depend on these conditions.
