Parnass Tower, Observation tower in Plön, Germany
Parnass Tower is an observation tower in Plön standing 21 meters tall with a steel lattice structure built upon a stone foundation. The platform at its top provides sweeping views across the surrounding lakes and rolling countryside.
The tower was built in 1888 by the Plön Tourist Association and received memorial plaques bearing Iron Crosses honoring the First Schleswig War and Franco-Prussian War. These inscriptions reflect the military commemoration priorities of that era.
The stone base displays three commemorative panels and a portrait relief of Emperor Wilhelm I, marking military events that shaped the region. These memorials show what the community chose to remember and honor in this public space.
The observation platform sits approximately 85 meters above sea level and is accessed via the tower's interior stairs. From this vantage point, visitors gain a clear overview of the surrounding lakes and hills.
The structure sits on the Parnaß hill, a terminal moraine left by the last ice age that naturally raises the tower above the surrounding landscape. This geological formation explains why this location was historically chosen for an observation point.
