Freilichtmuseum am Kiekeberg, Open-air museum in Rosengarten, Germany
The Freilichtmuseum am Kiekeberg is a collection of over 40 historical buildings and gardens from the 17th to 20th centuries spread across 12 hectares in the Harburg Hills. The buildings come from different regions and show how people lived and worked in rural areas.
The museum was founded in 1953 and documents agricultural changes in northern Lüneburger Heide and the neighboring Elbe marshlands. The collection preserves the history of these rural regions against the backdrop of industrialization and modernization.
The exhibition section called Spielwelten displays German toy development and children's culture from 1945 onwards across over 650 square meters. Visitors can see how toys and childhood changed during the economic miracle period that followed.
The museum grounds are easy to explore on foot, as all buildings are spread across well-maintained paths. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as a visit can take several hours depending on interest.
The museum's parking area was transformed into a certified organic garden and houses around 300 rare fruit trees. This unexpected green space project creates a learning area that familiarizes visitors with local biodiversity.
