Schloss Baldeney, Medieval castle in Essen, Germany.
Schloss Baldeney is a medieval castle ruin in Essen, perched on a rise directly above the shore of Lake Baldeney. The surviving stone walls and tower remnants reflect several building phases spread across the medieval period and beyond.
The castle was founded in the early 13th century as a stronghold by the rulers of the region and was rebuilt more than once over the following centuries. It changed hands several times in the late medieval period and gradually lost its military role.
Schloss Baldeney sits at the edge of the lake and is today a regular stop for walkers and cyclists passing along the shore. The ruins feel like a natural part of everyday life in Essen rather than a distant historical site.
The site is easy to reach from central Essen by public transport or by car, with parking available close by. Solid footwear is a good idea as the ground can be uneven and some parts of the area involve short climbs.
The lake that now surrounds the base of the castle did not exist when it was built. It was formed in the 20th century by damming the Ruhr river, placing the medieval ruins in a landscape that would have been unrecognizable to the people who once lived there.
