Hülsenhaine im Schellenberger Wald, Protected forest area in Essen, Germany
Hülsenhaine im Schellenberger Wald is a protected forest area covering about 47.5 hectares of mixed beech and oak woodland. The terrain features steep northern slopes and borders residential areas to the south.
The nature reserve received protected status in 1939 and became a sanctuary for local flora and fauna in an industrial region. This designation came during a period of rapid industrial development in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The forest still shows traces of the former Schellenberg estate that once occupied this land. Walking paths wind through the area and connect it to the broader trail network of the Ruhr Heights.
Multiple walking trails cross through the reserve and offer different route options. The main entrance is located near the Carl Funke parking area by Lake Baldeney.
The woodland has an unusually high concentration of holly trees that thrive in the mild microclimate of this protected area. These plants are found here far more frequently than in other German forest reserves.
