Schloss Mergenthau

Schloss Mergenthau sits roughly one kilometer north of Kissing and combines baroque design with the walls of a medieval fortress in the Lechrain region. The compound sits on elevated ground and shows how many castles in this area grew from older defensive structures.

The first record of the place dates to 1249, when it was documented as a bishop's property. Over the following centuries, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times, especially during local power struggles.

The name comes from the local family that once held the land, and visitors can see how different periods have left their marks throughout. The chapel with its decorative plasterwork shows how religious spaces were designed to impress.

The property continues to operate as an active agricultural estate and opens for events, markets, and educational programs throughout the year. Visitors should check ahead for opening times and scheduled activities to plan their visit properly.

Beneath the castle grounds lies the Wichtelenloch, a network of underground tunnels pointing to prehistoric ritual activities. These mysterious passages suggest human activity took place on this site long before the castle was built.
