Großes Moor, Nature reserve in Gifhorn, Germany
The Großes Moor spans 2720 hectares of protected land featuring peat bogs, heathlands, forest areas, lakes, and transitional moors near Gifhorn.
The moor underwent significant changes over the past 200 years due to peat extraction and agricultural activities, leading to the designation as a protected area in 1984.
The Nature and Cultural Experience Path Association organizes educational activities and maintains infrastructure to help visitors understand the importance of peat bog preservation.
Visitors can explore the reserve through a 12-kilometer bicycle path and a 5-kilometer walking trail equipped with educational signs explaining the local ecosystem.
The reserve implements natural maintenance through grazing animals such as moorland sheep and Konik horses to control unwanted vegetation growth.
