Schwimmendes Moor

Schwimmendes Moor is a nature reserve near Jade featuring a thick layer of floating peat across several hectares. Here, saltwater and freshwater environments meet directly, creating conditions where diverse plant species thrive together.

The site was originally much larger before medieval seawalls were built to protect the region. These structures reduced storm surge flooding, which once regularly inundated the peat layer.

The name comes from the peat's ability to float during high water events, a characteristic that shaped how locals understood and named this place. Walking through it today, you can see how this water-dependent ecosystem remains central to what makes the area distinctive.

Access is via a wooden boardwalk about 150 meters long that protects the delicate ecosystem from direct trampling. Wear sturdy shoes and stay on the path to keep the environment in good condition.

During extreme storm surge events that exceed typical high water levels, the roughly 3-meter-thick peat layer can actually float on the water surface. This occurs because of the geology of the site and reveals how dynamic the boundary between land and water truly is here.
