Kloster Wald, Cistercian monastery in Wald, Germany
Kloster Wald is a Cistercian monastery in the village of Wald in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, with surviving sections of a Romanesque and Gothic cloister. The complex groups historic religious buildings together with a school and residential areas on the same grounds.
The monastery was founded in 1212 by Burkard von Weckenstein for his sisters Judintha and Ita, making it the first Cistercian monastery in Upper Swabia. Over the following centuries it grew into one of the main religious centers of the surrounding area.
Girls who study at the school on the grounds learn traditional crafts such as woodworking and sewing alongside their regular lessons. Daily life here moves to a rhythm shaped by both school routines and the older habits of monastic life.
The site is active with school operations and residential use, so visits are only possible at certain times. It is worth checking in advance and being mindful of the daily routines of those who live and study there.
By 1784 the monastery had twelve fish ponds that were dug specifically to feed the nuns during fasting periods. This small detail points to how carefully the community managed its own food supply over the centuries.
