Talsperre Obermaubach

The Obermaubach Reservoir is a water body in the Rurtal region that covers roughly 55 hectares and is enclosed by a dam around 200 meters long. The dam rises approximately 6.7 meters above the water surface and serves both water storage and power generation purposes.

The reservoir was built between 1933 and 1934 to regulate water flow in the Rur River and prevent flooding in the surrounding area. Power generation at the facility started in 1969 and has since contributed to the region's energy supply.

The nearby Obermaubach village holds the Apollinaris Chapel built in 1778, which displays a Baroque altar and a 17th-century pulpit from an earlier structure. These religious furnishings reflect the area's spiritual traditions and remain central to local identity.

The water body is a popular spot for fishing enthusiasts who can find stocked fish such as trout and pike throughout the year. Visitors should use the trail system around the shore to reach fishing areas and explore the landscape at their own pace.

A scenic trail system connects multiple viewpoints in the surrounding area, including the Eifel-Blick forest chapel and the Engelsblick platform. From these elevated vantage points, visitors can see the valley and reservoir spread below and experience a different perspective of the landscape.
