Haus Stockum, Archaeological heritage castle in Werne, Germany
Haus Stockum is an archaeological site containing remnants of two castle complexes located on opposite banks of the Lippe River in North Rhine-Westphalia. The remains show the layout of these former noble estates, with much of their structure still buried beneath the ground.
The origins trace back to 858 when King Ludwig II granted substantial lands in Stockheim to the abbess of Herford Monastery. Over the centuries, two separate castle complexes developed at this location, eventually falling into decline and leaving behind the archaeological remains visible today.
The chapel within the complex served as a gathering place where local people came together to worship. It shaped the spiritual life of the surrounding community for many generations.
The site can be reached by heading south from the Gersteinwerk power plant in Sandbochum and following the path toward the grounds. Access requires careful attention since the remains are both above and below ground level, and visitors should move respectfully through the area.
The two castle complexes were separated by the Lippe River, an unusual arrangement for estates of that period. This distinctive spatial division makes the site particularly interesting to archaeologists studying medieval land organization.
