Haus Weitmar

Haus Weitmar is a manor house ruin in Bochum's Weitmar district with foundation walls and structural remains from multiple construction phases. The site includes chapel remnants and now functions as an outdoor space featuring art installations from various artists.

The site began as a farmstead during the Carolingian period and transformed into an upper court around 1000, gaining fortifications and a moat in the 12th century. The structures reflect building methods from multiple eras, documenting the shift from rural settlement to fortified complex.

The chapel ruins on the grounds display Gothic features and a square west tower with Romanesque characteristics that speak to its long construction history. Visitors can still observe these architectural details in the remaining walls today.

The grounds are open to the public and can be explored on foot while viewing the outdoor art installations. The best time to visit is during good weather to fully appreciate the ruins and sculptures in natural light.

In 2015, Situation Kunst, an underground art gallery, opened within the structures to host contemporary art exhibitions. This extension connects the historical ruins with modern artistic practice in an unexpected way.
