Haus Overdyck, Manor estate in Bochum, Germany
Haus Overdyck is a manor estate in Bochum featuring a large rubble stone main building with a square defensive tower positioned at one corner. The property included additional structures such as a deep ice cellar used for storing food before modern refrigeration became available.
The estate was held by the von Overdyck family beginning in the 14th century before passing to the von Steinhaus and von Loe families. In the 19th century, beer production began on the property, transforming it from a purely agricultural operation into an early industrial site.
The school founded on the estate welcomed children regardless of their religious background, showing an early commitment to inclusive education. This openness reflected values that were uncommon for rural estates of that era.
The site is located within Bochum and visitors can access certain areas of the grounds, though some parts may be restricted or under restoration. It is helpful to check in advance which sections are open to the public and whether guided tours are offered.
The first bottom-fermented beer in the region was brewed here in 1839 with the help of a Bavarian master brewer. This brewing technique introduced methods that later spread throughout the area and influenced local beer production.
