Haus Overdyck

The main structure of Haus Overdyck featured a substantial rubble stone building measuring 32 by 12 meters with a square tower at its northwest corner.

The estate belonged to several noble families throughout centuries, starting with the von Overdyck family in the 14th century and later passing to von Steinhaus and von Loe families.

In 1796, the estate established a free school accepting children of all denominations, marking an early step toward educational inclusivity in the region.

The estate contained a six-meter-deep ice cellar spanning 39.70 meters in length, which stored food supplies using ice harvested from the nearby Marbach river.

Count Adalbert von der Recke-Volmerstein founded the Gräfliche Overdycksche Brauerei in 1839, bringing the first bottom-fermented beer production to Bochum through a Bavarian master brewer.
