Haus Pröbsting, Water castle in Hoxfeld, Germany.
Haus Pröbsting is a moated manor house with a rectangular form and whitewashed walls, surrounded by water on all sides. The building features a grand staircase inside, with its east side creating a reflection in the surrounding water.
The building was constructed in the mid-14th century and stands as the oldest brick structure in Münsterland. It originated as a feudal holding of Vreden Abbey from 1221 onwards.
The poet Ilse von Stach grew up at the estate and drew from those memories when writing her novel 'Haus Elferding', linking the place to literary history. The building thus carries the personal story of an artist shaped by this location.
The building now operates as a private psychiatric clinic, so visitors cannot access the interior freely. However, the exterior views and the surrounding water features can be seen from outside the property.
The complex was taken over in 1930 by the Brothers of Mercy from Montabaur and converted into a care facility. This functional transformation of the historic site remains evident in how it is used today.
