Hans-Thoma-Gymnasium, Education institution in Lörrach, Germany
Hans-Thoma-Gymnasium is a secondary school in Lörrach, Baden-Württemberg, whose main building features a tower that stands out in the surrounding streetscape. The campus also includes a cafeteria shared with the neighboring Hebel-Gymnasium and sports facilities used by students throughout the week.
The school was founded in 1899 as a municipal institution and gradually became a established part of education in Lörrach. In 1948 it was renamed to honor the Baden painter Hans Thoma, who had died a few decades earlier.
The school takes its name from Hans Thoma, a painter born in the Black Forest region whose work is still shown in nearby museums. This connection to local art history gives the school a recognizable place in the cultural life of the area.
The school sits in a central part of Lörrach and is easy to reach by public transport. Outside school hours, the exterior and grounds are visible, but access to the buildings is generally restricted during the school day.
Students once organized a 24-hour running event around the school sports field and raised 30,000 euros to fund a new school library. The project came entirely from the students themselves, with no outside initiative pushing it forward.
