Mellingburg, Medieval castle ruins in Sasel, Germany
Mellingburg is a castle site in Sasel with medieval remains whose foundations and walls are still visible today. The ruins sit next to the Mellingburger Lock in the Alstertal and are surrounded by a nature reserve.
The site was settled from the 9th to 10th century and served as a strategic point on the Alster river. Excavations in the 1930s uncovered pottery and settlement traces that confirm this early medieval occupation.
The ruins sit within a residential neighborhood that has kept its medieval heritage visible. Locals and visitors recognize the site as a connection to the area's early settlement story.
The ruins are accessible via paths from the adjacent nature reserve and are easy to reach in a residential area. It is wise to wear comfortable shoes as the ground is uneven.
The preserved wall remains rise nearly 3 meters high and still show how early defensive structures were built. This evidence of medieval construction technique is remarkably well preserved despite the modern housing around it.
