Liberei, Medieval library building near St. Andreas Church in Brunswick, Germany
The Liberei stands as a brick Gothic structure measuring 5.50 by 5.14 meters, featuring architectural elements from the early 15th century.
Construction of the Liberei occurred between 1412 and 1422, making it the oldest independent library building located north of the Alps.
Johann Ember established the library with a collection of chained manuscripts, creating an early form of public access to literary resources.
The building underwent complete restoration in 1963 following World War II damage and now functions as a preserved architectural monument.
From the original 336 volumes donated by Gerwin von Hameln in 1495, 137 manuscripts survive in various libraries across Germany.
