Alte Waage

The Alte Waage is a timber-framed house from the early 17th century that displays typical German construction techniques through its diagonal and crossed wooden beams on the facade. The building originally stood at an important location in the old town and served the commercial and trading needs of the city.

The house was built in 1619 when Brunswick was growing rapidly as a trading center and needed new structures. This period shaped the old town with many such buildings that remain standing today.

The building shows how craftspeople and merchants worked together and what they valued in their construction practices. The visible wooden framework tells of local building techniques passed down through generations of carpenters.

The house is located in the old town and is easy to reach on foot, especially if you follow the marked path through the historic streets. Visitors can view the building from the outside and observe the facade details from different angles.

The wooden joints in this house were made entirely without metal nails and have held strong for over four centuries. Carpenters used shaped wood pieces and wedges to keep everything in place while achieving maximum stability.
