The Hagenmarktapotheke is a timber-framed house in Brunswick built using traditional methods from the North German region. The exposed wooden beams that form the structural skeleton are clearly visible on the facade.
This building became a pharmacy in 1677 and has served that function continuously at Hagenmarkt ever since. Its long operation makes it one of Brunswick's oldest pharmacies.
The timber frame design reflects North German building customs that you can still see throughout Brunswick's historic center. Walking past, you notice how the exposed wooden beams shape the character of this neighborhood.
The entrance is at Hagenmarkt street and stands out easily since the timber-framed facade is distinctive. Visitors should keep in mind this is an active pharmacy, so coming outside busy hours makes for a better experience.
The pharmacy has produced its own herbal liqueur called Stadtrath since 1848 using the same recipe unchanged. This handmade drink is a local product that visitors can take home as a souvenir.
